Endangered Species
1: Define Threatened Species:
- Threatened species are any species (including animals, plants, fungi, etc.) which are vulnerable to endangerment in the near future.
2: Define Endangered Species:
- An endangered species is any animal or plant of a particular species whose numbers are steadily shrinking that they are deemed to be at risk of extinction.
3: What are some of the human impacts to biodiversity?
- Habitat loss, overharvesting, climate change, pollution, deforestation and invasive species.
4: What are the characteristics of k selected species?
- K- selected species are present in environments that are predictable and where resources aren't necessarily fought over.
5: What are the characteristics of r selected species?
- High reproductive rate, less post-natal care, only some of the offspring survive, due to limiting factors.
6: What are some causes for species to become threatened or endangered more than others?
- Human activities and commercial.
7: What can we do to protect endangered species?
- Habitat preservation, legislation, breeding programs and education.
8: What are some laws that protect endangered species? How do we know if the law is a United States Law or International Treaty?
- Lacey Act, CITES, Convention on Biological Diversity. United States law if it is it has 'act' in it. It's international if it's a treaty, protocol or convention.
