cafo case study
Part 1
1. Concentrated animal feeding operations called CAFOs. It is factories farm.
2. 4 CAFOs are now located in FarmVille, one on each of the 4 corners of the country. - McGill Poultry is a medium CAFO housing 80000 laying hens - Honeyhill Farms and Eastville Swinery are 2 medium size CAFOs w/ between 5000 - 8500 pigs. - Pattengill Enterprises is the largest CAFO in the county w/ over 75000 swine under 55 lbs
3. Proponents - CAFO would bring in more revenue for the county through taxes. Also bring more jobs to the community. Several local businesses would benefit from trickle down effects. Increase production and hire more workers. Opponents - increase in environmental contamination.
Part 2
4. CAFOs are potentially economic gains come at too great a cost when measured against the likely increase in environmental contamination. CAFOs are most as same as animal abuse. But CAFOs create more jobs to the community.
5. Environmental contamination; unnatural food sources; animal abuse
6. Bias references = proponents --> benefits from CAFOs Unbiased references = opponents --> environmental contamination, medical conditions
Part 3
7. Asthma is a major medical concern
8. CAFO is the source of people's illness
9. We should consider experiences with the CAFO for out votes
10. I go against CAFO because of the environmental contamination and health problems that I've read.
Part 4
11. Cryptosporidium, giardia are some of the types of microorganisms identified in Hattie's water samples
12. EPA allows for 133 E.coli colonies/100mL. Drinking water cannot have any E.coli bacteria presented. 1 of the samples in Hattie's test had over 1000000 E.coli colonies in 100mL
13. No physical contact w/ water having over 1000 colonies. Some of her samples have had indicator E.coli levels that have exceeded the EPA recommendation for safe recreational use.
14. Farmers will present and share their thoughts at the board meeting to express their concerns about the CAFOs
15. I'd participate in the board meeting and/or help collect samples to save my own life and other people life. Keep our food naturally and healthy.
