1. What observations did Rachel Carson make about her environment? Explain in detail.
At first it was a beautiful and lively environment of the town. Green trees and scenery surrounding the road, the animals lived peacefully with people in the town. Then there was the aftermath of the strange illnesses included doctors and silenced springs.
2. How have chemicals changed the environment? What is DDT? What is it used for and what are the consequences of its use?
The chemicals require much more time compared to natures. DDT was an insecticide used by farmers to kill insects that were affecting their crops. Instead of killing the species of insects, it greater affected the surrounding species. The insects species in turn also evolved which created a deadlier insecticide.
3. Carson uses Robert Frost’s poem, The Road Less Traveled, as an analogy for making choices about our future- what does she say about what we must do?
The poem includes two roads, one that is more popular than the other. This tells the choices people can make that can either continue onto this terrible path or change for the future on the less popular route.
4. This book was written in 1962- have people heeded the warning about the toxins in our environment?
The people have taken some resolutions about the toxins. Certain acts such as the Clean Water Act and the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act have been created to further decrease the toxins. However, there are still a constant spur of chemicals and toxins everyday all over the world.
