APES- Biodiversity Hotspots Activity
Objective: To teach students what hotspots are as well as the characteristics of these critical habitats.
Materials: Computer with Internet access
Procedure:
Go to the website www.biodiversityhotspots.org.
Choose one of the biodiversity hotspot to study: Asia-Pacific
Create a 1 page handout that explains the following information:
Analysis:
1. List one animal and one plant that are native to this area.
- One animal that is native is the Rhacodactylus leachianus, the largest gecko in the world. A plant that is a native is the jarrah tree.
2. In which country is this hotspot located?
- The hotspot for the gecko is in New Caledonia. The hotspot for the jarrah tree is in Southwest Australia.
3. Is this country a developing or a developed nation?
- New Caledonia and Australia are developed nations.
4. What human activity is contributing to the biodiversity loss in this area?
- There is housing development affect the jarrah trees, and nickel mining in New Caledonia.
5. What, if anything, is being done to protect this hotspot?
- There is an increase of public awareness as well as government protected areas.
